Banyana Banyana have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Casablanca on Tuesday night. Thembi Kgatlana scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute to secure South Africa’s progression from Group B and set up a mouth-watering last-eight clash against tournament hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday, 8 August. How Banyana Banyana Reached the Quarterfinals

The defending champions entered their final Group B fixture knowing that only a win would keep their continental title defence alive after a challenging start to the campaign. South Africa lost their opener to Ivory Coast and then played to a draw against Tanzania, leaving them bottom of the group with just one point.

Kgatlana’s close-range finish came from a defence-splitting pass delivered from the midfield by Fikile Magama. The striker, who has become the team’s most reliable goalscorer, calmly turned the assist into the net to give South Africa the advantage.

Banyana had a nervous moment early in the second half when Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty after Antonia Maponya appeared to have brought down Adele Kabre in the box. However, after checking the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor, the referee overturned her initial decision.

South Africa controlled the game after Kgatlana’s opening strike and should have doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Isabella Ludwig failed to connect from her strike partner’s square pass. Burkina Faso threw everything forward in the final stages, but goalkeeper Kaylin Swart was solid between the sticks to ensure the slender lead remained intact.

Ivory Coast also did South Africa a huge favour by defeating Tanzania 2-1 in the group’s other fixture, finishing top of Group B with seven points while South Africa qualified in second place with four points.

The stakes are even higher than a place in the semi-finals. The 2026 WAFCON also serves as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Only the four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the global showpiece, meaning Banyana Banyana are now just one victory away from booking their ticket to Brazil.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan congratulated the team on their achievement while urging them to take the final step. “Well done Banyana Banyana. We are fully behind you and we are aware that one more victory will qualify us for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027,” said Jordaan.

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis, who has blended seasoned veterans with promising young talent for this tournament, has made it clear that the mission is straightforward. “Qualifying for the World Cup and then we see how far we go,” Ellis stated before the tournament.

Tough Test Awaits Against Hosts Morocco

South Africa now face arguably their biggest challenge of the tournament against hosts Morocco, who will enjoy passionate home support in Rabat. The match is a repeat of the 2022 WAFCON final, which South Africa won to claim their only continental title.

A look at the latest FIFA rankings shows that South Africa are 57th in the world (and second in Africa), while Morocco are 64th in the world and fourth on the continent.

However, playing away from home against a determined Moroccan side that topped Group A with seven points will be a daunting task. Kgatlana has suggested that Banyana’s vast experience at WAFCON will be crucial. South Africa has played in 15 editions of this competition and has never missed it since 1995, while Morocco boasts only five WAFCON appearances.

“Right now the most important thing is to recover to make sure that we arrive in the quarterfinals fresh. We have the experience … we’ve played Wafcon so many times and we understand the importance of focusing on ourselves,” Kgatlana said.

She added: “We started the tournament really slowly but we started to get our momentum against Ivory Coast. Sometimes football isn’t nice and beautiful, with tactics. Sometimes it’s just about getting the three points to move forward and that’s what we needed. Now everyone is happy and smiling in the locker room because they know how much it means for us to go through.”

Banyana’s WAFCON Journey So Far

South Africa’s tournament began with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Tanzania, which left them under immediate pressure. They then fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast, keeping their hopes alive. The victory against Burkina Faso, combined with Ivory Coast’s win over Tanzania, completed a remarkable turnaround for Ellis’ charges.

Banyana legends Portia Modise and Noko Matlou had previously chalked up the team’s struggles to shoddy preparations and lack of support, but both remained confident that Banyana would still make it to the quarterfinals.

“I am not surprised to see Banyana struggling. We’ve been talking about this for many years. Banyana lacks support from the country. They are not motivated because they lack support from Safa and the whole country,” Modise said before the Burkina Faso match. Despite these concerns, Matlou added: “I think we will beat Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast will win against Tanzania, so we should be okay.”

What’s at Stake in the Quarterfinal

The winners of the quarterfinal matches will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This means Banyana Banyana have the chance to secure their place on the world stage once again, having previously qualified for the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.
