After more than 20 years of captivating South African audiences, e.tv’s award-winning drama Scandal! has officially aired its final episode. The iconic soapie, which has been a staple in South African television since its debut, concluded its remarkable run at 8:00pm on a night that marked the end of an era for local television.
Last year, e.tv confirmed that the South African Film and Television Award-winning soapie would be going off screens after more than two decades. The channel explained that they believe Scandal! has reached the end of its life cycle and would be on air until the end of June 2026. That time has now arrived, and viewers have said goodbye to one of the most beloved shows in South African television history.
Jaw-Dropping Finale Delivers Emotional Moments
Leading up to the last chapter, the writers, production team, and actors delivered a jaw-dropping finale filled with moments that made viewers laugh, cry, and be shocked. The final episodes wrapped up storylines that have kept audiences engaged for years, providing closure for fans who have followed the show religiously.
Grace Mahlaba, the head writer of Scandal!, answered the burning question of how one writes the final chapter of one of South Africa’s most iconic stories. In a video on Instagram, she revealed that the process wasn’t gentle.
Finally, the truth catches up with everyone, but most importantly, every villain faces their reckoning, she said.
Fan Favourites Return for Final Chapter
The final chapter included appearances from beloved characters from the past. Daniel Nyathi, portrayed by the renowned actor Sello Maake kaNcube, and Quinton Nyathi, played by Brighton Ngoma, both made emotional returns to the show.
Maake kaNcube penned an emotional post ahead of his final appearance on Scandal!, reflecting on the iconic character he portrayed.
As Scandal! takes its final bow, I return one last time as Daniel Nyathi with a heart full of gratitude. What began as a role became a journey. Daniel Nyathi was embraced by millions of South Africans, and for that, I remain deeply humbled. Thank you to every viewer who welcomed him into your homes, argued with him, laughed with him, and at times, even forgave him, he wrote.
12 Years of Memories for Mapaseka Koetle
Actress Mapaseka Koetle, who has portrayed Didntle for 12 years and is among the last remaining original cast members, became emotional in a video where she shared what she will miss most about her time at Scandal!.
I literally grew up here so I think I’m going to miss the crew because, you know, actors we see each other a lot, we see each other in different sets, but with the crew I know that I might not see them again. I’ll miss the people. I will definitely miss the people that we work with, the crew, everyone, the cast, she shared.
End of an Era for e.tv Soapies
Scandal! is not the only show going off air. E.tv viewers are also saying goodbye to House of Zwide, which has been on air for five years. The final episode of House of Zwide aired at 7:30pm, followed by the last ever episode of Scandal! at 8:00pm, marking a significant shift in e.tv’s programming lineup.
The conclusion of both shows represents a major change in the South African television landscape. Scandal! has been a cultural institution, telling stories that resonated with millions of viewers across the country for over two decades.
